Case Study #01

From energy waste to continuous optimization: A national retailer transforms with Keedian

Starting Point
A leading U.S. retail chain had no formal energy goals or centralized data to monitor performance across its sites. As part of a broader sustainability initiative, the company sought to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge and needed a structured energy management program to help meet its reduction targets. To achieve this, the company partnered with Keedian to establish data-driven processes and build a scalable foundation for energy optimization.
Our Approach

Keedian began by collecting and analyzing energy utility bill data from all locations to create a portfolio-wide baseline and identify outliers and anomalies.

This analysis guided the installation of Energy Management Systems (EMS) in a subset of sites, where Keedian optimized schedules and setpoints that could be standardized across the network.

Using EMS metering and time-of-use data, the team identified performance issues, verified the impact of energy conservation measures, and prioritized capital projects. Data insights also informed lighting retrofit opportunities, which in turn enabled HVAC rightsizing
due to reduced heat load, delivering both kW and kWh savings from the LED installations.

Keedian helped the organization establish a continuous improvement model with regular energy reviews and planning sessions, ensuring the program evolved with the data. The team also supported the company’s participation in the Better Buildings Challenge through analysis, reporting, and onsite program activities.

Don't just take our word for it

01

Cumulative program savings to date: $74 million and 644.6 million kWh

02

Three solar systems installed, with the first completed in 2016

03

Development of a structured, repeatable framework for energy performance improvement

Impact Achieved
The company achieved and exceeded its DOE energy reduction goals ahead of schedule twice. Through its partnership with Keedian, it transitioned from reactive operations to proactive, data-informed decision-making. Energy utility and EMS data became central to identifying efficiency opportunities, guiding energy strategy, and prioritizing capital investments.

The collaboration evolved into a sustained, long-term partnership focused on continuous optimization and measurable impact across the portfolio.
